"There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there..."
- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientist

Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. The doomsday date has been predicted for 21 December. Relax folks, -- nothing bad is going to happen to our beautiful planet! Doomsday prophets have been doing this for years, and when the expected date comes and goes, another doomsday date takes its place. The world will not end on 21 December 2012. It will, however, be another winter solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere).

(Depending on the shift of the calendar, the winter solstice occurs on December 21 or 22 each year in the Northern Hemisphere, and June 20 or 21 in the Southern Hemisphere. The seasonal significance of the winter solstice is in the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days.)

The 2012 doomsday rumours started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Source:

I highly recommend you visit the NASA website I’ve referenced above, -- that is if you’re still worried about other rumours concerning looming dangers, such as giant asteroids colliding with our planet, or giant solar storms that will wipe us all out in the near future.

The crazy notions concerning Nibiru (Planet X), and an ancient race of extra-terrestrials called the Anunnaki, all come from the speculations of one man known as Zecharia Sitchin. Thousands of youngsters worldwide have lost their faith and turned away from Christianity as a direct result of this pseudoscience propagated by Sitchin.

Although his speculations have been ridiculed by professional scientists, historians, and archaeologists, many people worldwide blindly accept his theories as truth. Sitchin believes, among others, that the Anunnaki genetically engineered Homo sapiens as slave creatures to work their gold mines by crossing extraterrestrial genes with those of Homo erectus.

Sitchin’s falsehoods originated in that ancient wicked place called Babylonia. To the Babylonians, Nibiru was the celestial body or region sometimes associated with the god Marduk. Nibiru was also identified as the planet Jupiter in those ancient times.

It was while I was busy researching this section of my article that I became totally confused and lost. In fact, I became so lost to the extent that I seriously doubt we are in the year 2010!

The term zodiac derives from Latin zōdiacus, which in its turn comes from the Greek ζῳδιακὸς κύκλος (zōdiakos kuklos), meaning circle of animals, derived from ζώδιον (zōdion), the diminutive of ζῶον (zōon) animal. The name is motivated by the fact that half of the signs of the classical Greek zodiac are represented as animals.

In simple Astronomical terms the zodiac is the ring of constellations that lines the ecliptic, which is the apparent path of the Sun across the sky over the course of the year. In Astrological terms it becomes a complicated and confusing mess, -- so characteristic of how satan arranges things to cause chaos in our minds!

I honestly don’t care what star sign I am, or what expectations my future holds. My studies on this subject revealed, among other things, that besides the common 12 zodiac signs, there is a 13th one called, Ophiuchus, and that I may not be a Taurus after all!

The bottom line is…

“And he CHANGETH THE TIMES AND THE SEASONS: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:”
(Daniel 2:21) Emphasis added.

The ancient Hebrew people kept things simple and based their calendar-system on the following:

  • One day: The rotation of the Earth about it’s axis
  • One month: The revolution of the moon about the Earth (about 29 1/2 days)
  • One year: The revolution of the Earth about the sun (about 365 1/4 days or 12.4 lunar months)

The Hebrew calendar coordinates these three facts and as a result, some years on the Hebrew calendar have 13 months, which is considered a leap year.

They never used this information to predict future events. It was used to accurately record PAST and PRESENT events, hence the reason why their ancient history is so well documented in the Old Testament and other ancient writings. The study of Astronomy was and essential science they needed to develop and expand, in order to fix and remember certain important dates, as commanded by God. Here’s one example:

“Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee forth out of Egypt by night.”
(Deuteronomy 16:1)

The New Testament states, in I John 4:1, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God…”

Although it would appear that the above verse grants us permission to practise Astrology, it does not say that! It is telling us that we may seek the truth and compare the spirits to establish whether they are of God, or not, -- and this is exactly what this article is doing! The above verse also implies that there ARE other spirits out there, but they are NOT from God!

Sadly there are normal decent human beings among us who appear to be living healthy Christian lifestyles, but who are deeply involved in the art of Astrology. These people will try and convince you that the Bible totally supports the practice of Astrology, and will even quote biblical verses to convince you. Click here to view one example. Note how this individual tries to convince viewers that Astrology is not a belief system but a beautiful poetic language. Don’t fall for their charming lies!

A brilliant article on Astrology, by Dr. John Ankerberg, and Dr. John Weldon (from Encyclopedia of Cults and New Religions, Harvest House, 1999) has been reproduced on the web pages of If you are still sceptical why God forbids the practice, then I highly recommend you read the article. If the facts there don’t convince you, then nothing will! If you want to get to the nitty-gritty stuff ASAP, then go straight to the section-heading that deals with Part 4 - Astrology and the Occult.

The bottom line is that prolonged use of Astrology leads to the development of psychic abilities and the contact of spirit guides.

This is where the great danger lies and why it is outlawed in the Bible. According to the Word of God, this means people are contacting the world of demons, lying spirits whose primary goal is spiritual deception and destruction. Although some astrologers will fervently deny this, the majority of professional astrologers will admit that they are indeed involved with mediums and spirits, and also with esoteric disciplines such as yoga, Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, and Western magical traditions. Many astrologers have admitted that Astrology is "the key to all the occult sciences, and that "almost all occultists use astrological timing in their work.”

So—called ‘Centres for Spiritual Astrology’ are popping up everywhere on the Wild World Web. They’ll use the most gracious and polite words (like the serpent of old when Eve was approached) to lure you into their world of darkness and deceit. Some of them will go so far as to use specific keywords with the aim of attracting Christians to there web sites or facebook pages. I found this one by typing the following words in the Google search bar: “Astrologers Can Be Hazardous To Your Health”. It was a facebook page ranked ‘number one’ on the first page of Google.

You may also wish to read the biblical account in the Book of Acts, starting from chapter 16 verse 16, where Paul and Silas got into a spot of trouble after expelling an evil spirit from a damsel who was possessed with the demonic spirit of divination (fortune-telling).

Don’t let ANYONE convince you otherwise!

I have not touched on the subject of celestial navigation in this 2-part series, nor the essential role Astronomy has played in the development of this knowledge. The subject of celestial navigation deserves an article of its own, but while this blog exists for the purpose of conveying messages to Christians, I might as well draw attention to the fact that many men have lost their lives at sea and in the air because they had no knowledge of navigation, or because of defects in the navigational equipment.

Over the ages men have always searched for better ways to navigate the seas and the skies. The advances they made often came at a costly price, - and not only in monetary terms but in the loss of lives as well.

The Holy Bible is also an important navigational tool, - an essential guide for survival. If you’re reading some or other mixed-up translation of the Bible, or rely on other non-biblical material for your salvation, your navigational tools are defective!

Today we are living in the age of precision timekeeping devices and Global Positioning Satellites. Some of us are totally dependent on GPS devices so that we don’t get lost in the maze of roads. In South Africa it has almost become an essential tool for survival as the names in maps no longer correspond to the new names given to places and streets.

Technology in this regard is becoming more and more advanced by the day, and is sadly creating the false perception that we can in fact become just like God, - if we keep on trying! Besides the fact that most of us are totally clueless as to how or why these devices work, and are in this regard basically on the same level as our primitive forefathers who couldn’t bother to figure out what the real purpose was behind the construction of stone calendars and observatory towers, we seldom (almost never) take into consideration that if it weren’t for God’s perfection in the design of our earth, our galaxy, and the universe, GPS gadgets will not work because manmade satellites will not remain in a stable orbit.

Man is giving himself the credit for his achievements, forgetting that it is God who is the True Mastermind behind these inventions. When last have you heard a politician, a leading scientist, or an inventor say: “To God be the Glory, the credit, and the honour!” ???

Modern man has even disguised God’s meticulous perfection by calling it other names, such as ‘Anthropic Constants’ or the ‘Anthropic Principle’. Don’t even bother looking up these terms on Wikipedia, because the arguments presented there appear to have one purpose in mind, and that is to create further confusion! Click here if you wish to read a well-written and truthful version of the facts.
