I must honestly admit that when I first started exploring the subjects of Astronomy and Astrology, I never realized that there was such a vast quantity of information available on this subject. Conflicting opinions are also numerous and diverse, -- enough to drive one crazy!

Wikipedia in particular, is a place where one can easily loose yourself as one article leads to another, and yet another, --- and just when you think you’ve seen it all, you find another one, which in turn leads to the next, and so on. Talk about astronomical! After sifting through mountains of mesmerizing data, I realized that I was facing a dilemma when the time came to keep things simple in an easy-to-read blog article. So with that said, please consider what you are about to read here as a mild condensed version of the basics.

I’ve tried to keep this article almost childlike in its simplicity, with the hope that it may attract a wider audience and that readers may forward the article to younger viewers. Mature Christians who have a thorough knowledge of the Bible will immediately perceive that I have subtly associated the development of religion (in its basic primitive form) with certain elements of Astronomy. I hope this does not offend Christians in any way.

It did not come as a surprise to me that the Holy Bible actually said quite a lot about Astronomy. It strengthened my conviction that the scriptures were written by the divine inspiration of God, - the Supreme Creator of the Universe. It also revealed to me that the Patriarchs of the Bible were highly intelligent beings, and that some of these wise fellows were in all probability the Chief Astronomers in their times. I also came to the conclusion that their ‘ASTRONOMICAL’ wisdom was due to their ASTRONOMICAL ages.

Adam 930; Seth 912; Enosh 905; Kenan 910; Mahalalel 895; Jared 962; Enoch 365 (did not die, but was taken away by God: Genesis 5:24); Methuselah 969; Lamech 777; Noah 950 years old. – Source: The Holy Bible (See also: The ages of the patriarchs in Genesis 5 and 11)

For many people these ages don’t make sense. We tend to make the grave error of comparing everything we read, hear or see, to our modern-day standards and perceptions. We have become so obsessed with SELF and our own accomplishments, that we seldom stop to ponder the possibility that our ancient ancestors were, in many respects, far more advanced than we are.

When you pose the question: “Did you know that the units of the hour, minute and second were developed more than 4000 years ago, from the movements of the moon?” – most people will stare at you speechless. Others will say, “But yes, that’s exactly one of the reasons why aliens must have ruled the world in ancient times!” They will immediately refer you to one of countless books on the subject confirming this viewpoint. There are literally hundreds of these books being published every year, all proclaiming the central theme that there must have been a highly advanced civilization on earth before our time, a civilization so advanced that they used incredibly precise units of measurement based on a deep understanding of the solar system. They must have been gods from another planet!

We do not take into consideration that our ancient ancestors had all the time in the world to reach a high level of advancement. In my own short lifetime I have met some amazing people, who have accomplished remarkable achievements before the age of 50. I have often wondered what those people would have achieved if they had lived longer.

Today, a small percentage of mankind make it to the age of 90. Those who do make it to that ripe old age usually suffer from all sorts of ailments such as, arthritis, poor eyesight, Alzhiemers, etc. Our earliest ancestors lived in a world quite different to ours. This is another concept we find hard to comprehend, but if you use your basic common sense and a little open-minded imagination you’ll come to realize that people like, among others, Zecharia Sitchin, who promote the crazy notion that we owe our existence to ancient astronauts or extra-terrestrial beings, who came from some or other hypothetical planet, are in fact way off track. New Age activists are particularly obsessed with this way of thinking. They have demoted God the Creator of our Universe to an alien, and are influencing thousands into believing that we are merely a slave species of the gods.

Anatomically modern humans evolved from archaic Homo sapiens in Africa in the Middle Paleolithic, about 200,000 years ago. By the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic 50,000 BP (Before Present), full behavioral modernity, including language, music and other cultural universals had developed. Source: So can anyone tell me, what did mankind do with himself all those years? Did they all just remain simple hunter-gatherers? I strongly doubt it! When a textbook says: “Until c. 10,000 years ago, most humans lived as hunter-gatherers,” we fail to see the words “most humans” in that sentence. What happened to the rest of those humans?

Stay tuned! The answers are coming, -- but before we continue there are a two concepts that need to be defined.

It is vital that readers know the difference between these two terms, for the one is from God and the other is not.

ASTRONOMY is a NATURAL SCIENCE that deals with the study of celestial objects, -- in other words, the sun, moon, stars, planets, comets, nebulae, star clusters, galaxies, and other phenomena that originate outside the Earth's atmosphere. It is concerned with the evolution, physics, chemistry, meteorology, and motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and development of the universe.

It is the oldest science on earth, and evidence of this can be seen in the many astronomical artefacts that were left behind by ancient man. Although the Egyptian monuments and the famous Stonehenge are quite old, a recent discovery of an ancient stone calendar site in Mpumalanga, South Africa, called ‘Adam’s Calendar’ is dated thousands of years older.

ASTROLOGY on the other hand, is a group of SYSTEMS, TRADITIONS, and BELIEFS which hold that the relative positions of celestial bodies and related details can provide information about personality, human affairs and other "earthly" matters.

Astrologers believe that the movements and positions of celestial bodies either directly influence life on Earth or correspond to events experienced on a human scale. Modern astrologers define Astrology as a symbolic language, an art form, or a form of divination (future-telling).

A common assumption of astrologers is that celestial placements can aid in the interpretation of past and present events, and in the prediction of the future. THE BIBLE FORBIDS THIS, and Part 2 will reveal that there is a compelling reason why you should not even think of disobeying God’s instructions in this regard, because if who delve too deep it can be gravely hazardous to your spiritual health. It can also seriously damage your mind to such an extent that you WILL contemplate committing the act of suicide. Please trust me on this. I’ve seen it happen with my own eyes!

The two words ‘Astronomy’ and ‘Astrology’ sound similar, and can thus easily be misconstrued when reading any article that makes a comparative study of these two terms. Please keep this issue in mind while reading this article!

Once primitive man had settled in one spot for a longer than usual stretch of time, and he became familiar with the natural features in the area, it probably did not take too long to realize that there was a definite correlation with the sun’s movement in the sky and the shifting of shadows cast by fixed earthly objects such as rocks, hilly outcrops, and trees. Obviously man’s own shadowy mirror image on the ground must have also activated curiosity in the minds of some primitive men. The crude design of sundials (shadow-clocks) using fixed natural structures, were in all probability the very first devices built for purposes of satisfying the curiosity of man and his hunger for knowledge.

Although a simple shadow-device would have quickly indicated when it was midday (noon), man would also have noticed that the shadow-length at noon is short in summer months and longer in winter months, -- that is IF man focused his attention on the shadows for a longer than usual time period.

Where primitive clans were settled along coastlines, the recurring rise and fall of ocean tides must also surely have had enquiring minds pondering whether the moon and sun had something to do with it. The gifted and inquisitive minds among the various primitive clans, whether situated on the coastline or inland, must surely have noticed that the sun followed the same path across the sky every day. At some stage, -- most likely while they were lying on their backs preparing for sleep, and while admiring the awesome beauty of the moon and other bright objects in the might sky, the enquiring minds of some of these men must have recalled seeing the exact same celestial objects appearing at the exact same spot they were seen the previous night. In other words, that these objects appeared to be ‘fixed’ in the heavens. The science of Astronomy was on the verge of being born as these men pondered what exactly the purpose of the sun, moon, and stars were, and how these splendid heavenly objects could be utilized for a purpose.

Let’s stop there for a brief moment and play around with numbers, -- or years. How long do you think it took man to realize there was something the moon, sun and stars were telling them? One hundred years, or maybe five hundred years??? Remember, 10,000 years ago MOST MEN were hunter-gatherers! Let’s be fair and subtract 2000 years from 10,000. In other words, 8000 years ago mankind was still lying on their backs, staring at the moon and stars. For 2000 years they did not make one single attempt to further the science of Astronomy!

One may argue that they never had powerful telescopes or precision instruments like we have, -- but yet we tend to forget that they did not need telescopes or fancy gadgets. They in fact invented their own fancy gadgets, -- gadgets so advanced that we cannot figure out how it was done. Not only did these ancient men live on average 5 times longer than us, their eyesight was probably 100 times better than ours. Besides that, the night sky was far more clearer back in those days.

The earliest recorded account of a sundial, the "dial of Ahaz", is described in the Old Testament scriptures in II Kings 20:11 and also in Isaiah 38:8. This was roughly in the year 700 BC, but there’s no doubt that sundials were used many ages before that time. From its description in the Bible it appears that the ‘dial of Ahaz, must have been one of the more advanced designs, but even more complex designs evolved over the next 500 – 600 years.

A fascinating astronomical clock called the ‘The Antikythera mechanism’, -- so named because it was recovered in 1900–01 from the Antikythera wreck found off Point Glyphadia on the Greek island Antikythera, is estimated to have been built about 150 – 100 BC. The mechanism of this ancient clock is so advanced that many modern-day researchers regard this device as the worlds first complex scientific calculator, or first known analog computer. Read all about it here.

We are already in the year 2010, and our scientists are still trying to figure out all the mysteries of that ancient clock, -- yet we are still adamant in our views that primitive man was a slow thinking old-fashioned creature.

The inspiration for the construction of the first primitive calendars on earth, most probably came about when man noticed that that the most conspicuous and largest objects in the sky, -- the sun and the moon, gradually changed their orbital path and that this phenomenon also coincided with the changing of the seasons. If they stayed in one place long enough they would also have noticed that this was happening year in and year out, in what appeared to be a fixed pattern. Now don’t tell me that it took man another 2000 years to figure this out!

One can safely assume that the very first primitive calendars were not designed from heavy rocks but simple sticks and stones carefully positioned in the ground. I think it is also safe to assume that this seemingly unimportant pastime was only practised by a select few in the clan, -- people with an inquisitive mind and a hunger for knowledge. In the early stages those inquisitive minds probably never even anticipated that members of their tribe would one day treat them as Lords, and possibly elect them as chiefs of the tribe.

One can only imagine what went through the minds of ancient folk when their crudely built calendars successfully determined seasonal or celestial events, such as lunar eclipses, solstices, and so on. I’m quite sure they must have expressed their joy and happiness by dancing, singing, and making quite a racket. Imagine what must have happened the year after that, when the selected few big chiefs in the tribe decided to make some rules? “Now listen here guys and dolls, let’s do the celebrating in an orderly fashion this time. It took us ages to figure out where we placed our sticks and stones, which you people destroyed with all your stomping and happy dancing!”

The behaviour of these ancient folk was a mere expression of their joy and happiness. The same behaviour was expressed when their hunters made a huge killing.

As I’ve explained in my previous article, THE SUPREME BEING OF PRIMITIVE MAN, people in ancient times also perceived God as Supreme Creator of everything on earth and in the heavens, exactly as we Christian do. The ancient Africans called this Supreme Being, Mawu. Their expressions of joy and happiness whenever an exciting event occurred in their lives was done in praise of their Supreme Creator.

“Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.”
(Psalms 149:3)

Man is by nature an inquisitive being, and when there’s nothing exiting going on in their lives they will soon find something fascinating to occupy and entertain their minds with. Our primitive ancestors also displayed these exact same qualities, hence when night time came, they looked for other activities to keep themselves busy. Besides storytelling around fires, and the natural pleasures of sexual indulgence with the madam, man must have also speculated how to improve their calendars, and/or astronomical observatories. “Come guys, let’s study that group of twinkling stars up there, and see if we cannot incorporate them somehow into our dreary lives; maybe we’ll discover something new!”

If you’ve been reading this article and have come so far, I gather that you have already picked up the subtle hints that Astronomers were not gods. They were intelligent human beings like you and me, created by the same Supreme Being that created everything else. They were treated with godlike (holy) respect by tribal members since the beginning of time, for a purely logical and valid reason!

As the years passed by, and the primitive calendars steadily progressed into precision Rolux machines, the big chiefs had to make some more rules for the disobedient folk and their kids. “Thou shalt not enter the space of our calendar, for it is a sacred place!” Sacred in the sense of delicate, -- because it was designed and built with much effort!

By the time primitive man figured out that ‘bigger is better’ because wild animals and disobedient humans and their kids could not damage them, the concept of ‘sacred’ was already well imbedded in the minds of ordinary folk.

One can well imagine that some form of punishment may have also been implemented if anyone contravened the rules. “We saw footprints inside the observation tower this morning. Which one of you DO NOT understand the rules of this tribe?”

Can you see how the combination of ‘sacredness’ and ‘rules’ were slowly sprouting into a creed of some sort, -- or to put it another way, into a statement of faith, commitment, devotion, -- in other words, a religion!

The natural and instinctive behaviour to dance and sing whenever something exciting occurred (as mentioned above) did not diminish. However, I am sure that readers can comprehend by now why joyful behaviour anywhere near a circle of carefully positioned stones and observation towers, took place in a controlled and orderly fashion. The observatory towers were their precision instruments! The majority of those ancient Astronomers even etched their observations and calculations in stones in or near the observatory towers. Their constructions thus became libraries of essential information, that was passed on from one generation to the next.

(Most people I know also treat their precision instruments (expensive digital cameras, fancy iPods, etc.) as sacred. The same can be said about our studies, where we store valuable books or other precious articles.)

People who play a leadership role in any community are normally the ones who are also bombarded with curious questions and pleas for advice and guidance. If their answers or advice is proven wrong or inaccurate, then it can be naturally assumed that their leadership-status among the community would be at risk. The ancient Astronomers therefore had an obligation to their community to seek and find answers, not in dreams or subconscious feelings as is the case with Astrology, but in nature and real objects that were visible to the naked eye.

The ancient big chiefs and Astronomers were also wise enough to realize that nightly observations made over a couple of generations would yield significant outcomes. They also realized that they were not going to achieve perfection in their lifetime, hence the reason why a selected few youngsters in the community, -- those who showed some degree of aptitude and/or interest in the subject of Astronomy, were chosen as trainee students. I truly doubt that the tribal leaders and Astronomers of our primitive ancestors wasted their time teaching every single member of the tribe the intricate science of Astronomy. No, only a select few with the aptitude and intelligence for the subject were the CHOSEN ONES! Can you see where this is leading?

If one looks at this subject from the perspective I’ve tried to illustrate here, then one can well imagine why members of a tribe respected and obeyed the Astronomers. The study of Astronomy had also turned these men into surveyors, engineers, architects, planners and builders. Their advice was accurate, or to put it another way – they had proven themselves to be reliable and truthful. When the wise chief said: “See that huge rock standing over there, about 8 miles north? Now go fetch it and put it here in this exact spot!” They listened and obeyed, without hesitating. When the wise men said: “It is time to harvest!” – The people acted without a quarrel. When they proclaimed: “This young lady is 16 years old, and ready for a husband,” it was accepted as truth and the necessary arrangements were made without any fuss.

As the years progressed and tribes grew larger in numbers, many people in the tribe had no clue what the real purpose was behind the study of Astronomy. All they knew for certain was that the astronomers among them held some or other special wisdom, - a mystical foresight to plan and predict, among others, exactly where dwellings should be built for maximum warmth in winter and maximum coolness in summer. It is therefore no wonder that these astronomers were highly respected by members of the clan, and why over time this respect took the shape of ‘holiness’ and ‘godliness’.

There is no doubt in my mind that the astronomers of ancient times where also the surveyors, engineers, architects, planners and builders. These gifted and privileged men also became the decision makers and the lawmakers in their respective communities. When those leaders passed on they were remembered and honoured by members of their tribes, and they had every right to do so! Even God Himself saw the common sense of using these wise men as the patriarchs of His Written Word.

God’s Calendar is marked in the stars, kept by the moon, observed by the sun, and ordered in the rotation of the earth.
God’s Calendar

At some stage during man’s progress through life people started losing site of God, and instead they started praising themselves for their accomplishments. Their song and dance became a ritual act of attaining ecstasy for personal satisfaction. Man soon become addicted to this altered state of consciousness, which was brought about by so-called ‘trance dancing’. Feelings of happiness and joy was no more done as an expression of praise to the Supreme Creator, but became a ritual (routine) act focusing exclusively on SELF.

I am absolutely convinced that this did not happen by accident, but was planted in the minds of men a long time ago by some other influence, most likely originating from the East. This ties in with several articles I’ve already published concerning Cain’s negative influence on mankind, -- the man whom God banished to the East of Eden.

In certain ancient cultures the Tribal Chiefs were powerless to stop this. They were also totally outnumbered is some communities. This was the beginning of a crude form of democracy where the majority decided who shall govern them. The end result spelt disaster!

Today the so-called ‘Rave Scene’ has became a modern versions of trance dancing. The main drug used to speed up and induce the altered state of consciousness while these people rave is called Ecstacy. Can you see the connection with age-old magic charm?

Many publications dealing with this issue will tell you that it is all part of a natural process. They are lying! See this article for more info.

“The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.”
(Lamentations 5:15)

(Incidentally, -- for those who are still pondering what colour or race of people the ancient Israelites were, verse 10 in the Book of Lamentation chapter 5 provides a clue. Verse 10 states: “Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine.” Now if their skin already had a natural dark black ‘African” pigment, the famine which is spoken about and the black appearance it produced on the skin, would not have been noticeable, and hence not worthy of mentioning. Diseases caused by famines do not change skin colour forever. Once the disease is healed, skin will return to its normal original colour.)

In many cultures such as the Bushmen of the Kalahari (Namaqualand), we can find techniques of trance dancing, which elevate them into ecstatic, altered states of consciousness. When the Bushmen enter this state, it is reported that such an incredible rush of energy surges through their bodies that they cannot help but fall to the ground. Source: Trance Dance and Ecstasy.

The earliest Dutch settlers who arrived in South Africa called the Namaqua people ‘The Chinese Hottentots’. For further details view the article: Evidence of early Chinese influence in Africa (Tia Mysoa Blog).

Thousands of mysterious rocky outcrops, which have been identified as ancient calendars and observatory towers, as well as structures built in honour of deceased tribal chiefs, have been discovered in our modern times. In almost every case various experts in their fields have classified these ancient structures as ‘religious’ centres, built by high priests of some or other strange religious order or cult. In most case they are 100 percent correct!

Click here to view the details of a recent discovery of an ancient monolithic stone calendar site in Mpumalanga, South Africa. They have incorrectly named this stone structure ‘Adam’s Calendar’, -- because, as I’ve mentioned before, I firmly believe that Adam was created many years after that time; a concept which I’ve touched on in several other postings on this blog, as well as the parent blog Tia Mysoa. See for example, the section ‘The Origin of the Black Races’ in a previous posting – Painting a Picture of Evil – Part 2.

(Take note: The posting does not say Black people are evil. Although the title of that posting appears to be misleading, it is in fact referring to Cain (satan’s son). You may also want to view Adam the Farmer on the Tia Mysoa parent blog, that is IF you have a desire to understand why I say Adam was not the first man on earth.)

Ancient Africans were particularly obsessed with the moon, and the recurring fables and legends that evolved from this eventually progressed into various ritual acts that can only be described as Moon Worship.

There is no doubt in my mind that one of the cornerstones of Astrology has its foundations hidden somewhere in superstitious fables, most likely originating from Africa in a mild and innocent form, -- but perfected thousands of years later as a highly advanced evil art form, -- miles away from Africa in the East, which most reliable sources have identified as a place called Babylonia.

Thirteen modern-day countries use the moon crescent on their flags. The African countries are: Algeria, Comoros, Mauritania, Tunisia, and Western Sahara. The other countries are chiefly Asian.

Moon worship still exists today in various parts of the world and among different cultures, but it is particularly prominent among certain African and African-American groups.

Many modern-day astrologers (fortune-tellers, clairvoyants, psychics, etc.) are also obsessed with the moon. When I think of these people I cannot help but wonder why the moon has such a long association with insanity and irrationality. (The words lunacy and loony are derived from the Latin name for the Moon, Luna.) --- Lol

The many fables and legends associated with the moon and the sun were probably fashioned more or less in the same period when Astronomers were making crucial advances in the field of Astronomy. One can well imagine how primitive folk, with no interest or aptitude for the science, made up stories for its entertainment value, and how these stories expanded and grew elaborate tails as it spread from one culture and generation to the next.

Who knows, maybe some Astronomers were themselves responsible for these fables and legends. Don’t we sometimes get impatient with our kids when they ask complicated questions?

“Daddy, where do I come from?”
“The big stork dropped you off on the front porch!”

Excellent article. I am a believer of Christ, and off and on I have been struggling with New Age for years. I do want and am working on a deeper spriritual relationship wiht Christ and letting go of New Age. Thank you for this blessing of your threads. I am going to re-read this blog. I actually came across your blog by accident in my research of Sudan, but then again,I believe Yah brought me to your blessing. Thank you and Yah bless you.
